It is truly amazing how certain rooms can really define a person for who they are and what they value in life. My dorm room is a perfect example of this. It is probably my favorite place to be and every little detail describes perfectly who I am. Even my bedroom back at my house was not quite as perfect as my dorm is now. It did not have all of the values of me represented. And the best part about my dorm right now, it is MY dorm. I made a decision over the summer to pay more money and have the room to myself and not have to worry about a roommate potentially transferring into my room. I get to organize it however I want, I get to study when I want, sleep when I want, and party when I want. It’s absolutely perfect and it is worth every penny and more of what I spent for it.
So how does my room define me? When someone walks into my room, what will they be able to see about my personality? What clues will help them understand who I am? I like to believe the first thing people notice about my room is the neatness and organization of it. I do like to think of myself as a very organized person who values the importance of keeping things in logical places as to be able to have quick access to them to save time. My desk is probably the next thing that people notice about my room. Over the summer when I came to Wayne State for orientation, I noticed that the desks they provided would not satisfy my study needs. I love space and I love organization. So I decided I was going to build my own desk! This desk took me about a month and a half to build and I could not be more proud of my work. It satisfies every single need I have and it really is the perfect place for me to study.
The next thing someone might notice is the serene and calm feeling the back section of the room provides. I enjoy peace and quiet from time to time and my painting of the ocean that hangs on my wall shows that I enjoy an occasional moment where nothing matters in the world. Also, it would also become apparent that I like to socialize. The room is known pretty much as the hang out spot of the 4th floor and I love it for that. People come in to visit me all the time and I did organize it so they would have that ability and feel welcome into my room. And finally, the multiple pictures and memorabilia from high school and past parts of my life will show that I value where I came from and I enjoyed my life up until now.
Basically, it’s hilarious that a 19’ X 15’ room can tell so much about a person. But now that I stopped to right this blog, I realized that it really is true that people can be described perfectly by the place they live.

Nice post. Seems like people are envious of you, Reid. Now you have to invite Seeron over.
Reid, your room is legendary. Sorry for all the messes we have made in it, haha. Nice post though. You’re right, it is funny how much you can tell about a person from their room. I didn’t even think about half the stuff you mentioned and I’ve seen your room on numerous occasions. I’m embarassed to admit it, but this blog reminds me of MTV room raiders

I think thats really cool how much thought and time you put into your room. I can’t believe you made your own desk and that its all yours.

Your room as an extension of yourself is, by the way, the best possible place to study and get stuff done. When you feel comfortable, at home, at peace, in your ‘chi’, you tend to be more focused, so yeah, it’s definitely worth the money you spend on it.
I’m curious to know if you feel claustrophobic in your dorm at all? The sheer idea of a dorm room scares me because I hate small areas. If I could live in a lecture hall that seated 400 people as my own room, I’d love it, because I like wide opened spaces. Do you ever feel cramped or closed in, with a lack of room to literally ‘be yourself’ at all, or are you pretty content with what you have now?
If I didn’t have 18 foot ceilings I’d be in some sort of sharp pain right now…:/
I agree with your statement and those found in the prior responses. You can tell a lot about a person by their room or spaces in general.
I was once in an elementary school experiment where my teacher took the class and gave us all the same shaped puzzle like pieces (from the geometry kits), she asked us to make a figure but not to show anyone. There were some poll like stations set up in the gymnasium. The results were astounding (for that age), There were only 4 matches in the 32 kids in our class.
Everyone’s personality and minds were different, so there use and interpretation of the pieces induced shapes and figures that were unique to themselves. Everyone shows who they are in many ways like fashion, spacial decor, and there train of thoughts.

p.s. you room sounds cool, and you’d be a great roommate. Clean and organized is always a good match.
