Looking at the word adverting makes you think that’s advertising is easy in sample but, its not because you have to constantly sale yourself and make sure you don’t use the same words to each customers word it in a differ way. You want to make sure that your Trade Promotion is done correctly because, this is the part help you same your product to the customers. The definitions for Trade Promotion are sales promotion activities designed to get support for a product from manufacture. Their was a student on campus was trying to sale their product to me. Their product that they were trying to say me was coupons that you can use on campus until January. The student had to persuade me to buy their product. As I was walking away the student was very consistence and was still trying to sale their product to me. The student did a good job persuading me because when she said she needed to sale 1,000 books and she only sold 4. The student really made me feel bad but,(I guest not bad even for me to buy it.) if I really felt that I need the product I would have brought it. “Thanks for Smoking” show us how to persuade people to buy our product. Letting the customer know that they really need the product. One of the way to persuade our customer’s we have use coupons. The coupons help us get customer especially when you don’t have any type of business. This is now you get money for customer’s and drive them to come to your store or buy your product. For example the early sale after Thanksgiving. People go crazy running, fighting, argue ect. To get their product that’s on sale because the customers know the price is going to go up and that their product is going to be gone. That’s how promotion, and ad’s gets our attention. We react to it quickly because you want them to have some left over for you. The products sales faster when you gives customers discounts. The consumers know that having discounts makes the customers hungry for your product.

Im just goin to skip all the excuses of why i posted late and just apologizing

What most people call advertising; i call giving us a bunch of BS in order to squeeze money from our pockets. I dont know if everyone agrees with me, but thats just how i feel. I think that every advertisement is one-sided and sugar coated to appeal to us. Even advertisements that do tell you everything still try to trick you; like those commercials about some new drug treatment. Sure they tell you about the side effects, but they say it so quickly and softly most people dont get the whole thing or just dismiss it all together. Ads in magazines are the same way, they always have the bold print that they want you to see but there is always the small print that explains everything that makes them look bad. Dont get me wrong, i dont really hate ads or commercials, i just know that most of it all is just there to make us want to buy it.

Advertising is everywhere nowadays and much more bold and eye-catching because people dont pay attention to them as much as they used to. We grew up being exposed to a massive amount of advertising, of course this probably had a larger influence on us when we were younger. but today i think most people just dont notice them so much anymore; and because of this adverizers and companies of these products have to work harder to get our attention. Ads everywhere have to be the best that advertizers can provide to the people. Not just better quality of commercials but more quantity as well. In order to make buy a certain brand i think they are trying for a constant reminder of what products we should buy instead of trying to get us at that one great commercial. So i think that advertsing kinda shot itself in the foot. They all are competing so much that they really are annoying most people. i have alot more to say but i have to stop and start commenting cuz its already 4:30 on the second day

With many apologies to the lateness and my absence from class, I present my blog:

I preface this with the irony I relized after re-reading this, I’m writing about this really horrible form of communication where someone is basically forcing a message down your throat with witty and creative remarks…(and I am quite witty I must say) and you have no choice but to just accept it without any recourse at that given second. So I’m not much better than the Man himself, except of course I’m not getting paid.

Advertising in the mainstream has become a job, where as if I may point out Art has remained a hobby. The blend of these two have sprung out both the good and the horribly horribly bad, as evident by the TAG Bodyspray campaign (Someone seriously tell me that dude lost his job, please).

When you look at an ad, what do you see? Who cares, that’s not even the focal point anymore, it’s not what you see, it’s what your mind sees. These people, these “marketing specialists” (read: consecrated evil of the business world((read: liars for hire))) don’t just get paid more a year than most of you can hope to make in your life, they went from arranging text on the billboards of the 20s to look attractive and sell products to actually merging styles of art and popular culture (Yeah, thanks Warhol, too bad you’re not around to really let the ‘fruits’ of your labor really start to rot your brain too) to subconsciously yell out to you “OH M Y GOD BUY THIS YOU NEED IT NOW” as you look at a picture of a well photographed can of Coke at the store. You can’t even turn it off, advertising should be illegal. Welcome to 1984, the Thought Police have already invaded and there’s no switching channels.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE! It slices, it dices, and a large part of the money you pay out to Comcast for your cable goes to the prolonging of those damn infomercial extravaganzas to liquidate your mind into even more a puddle of mush at 3am. You don’t chose to pay advertisers, people take that choice for you, but the fact remains you as people are contributing to this, this…

Well, this:

You can’t turn off that Abercrombie ad, no matter how disgusted, annoyed, offended or pissed off you could possibly be about it, that’s the beauty of ads! I can tell that bum hustling vacuum cleaners to leave me alone, I CAN’T TELL BILLY MAYES TO FALL INTO A HOLE AND NEVER COME BACK. Oxy-clean yourself off my television set and let me get back to Jon Stewart you over-exaggurative half-wit.

Advertising spreads a message, most of the time one geared to making some other guy tons of our money, based on falsities. But alas, we have messages of power, messages of resistance and the overcoming of The Man, we called it art, we called it the self expression of the small in large, unexpected ways. Graffiti art? That’s SOOOoooo 1990s, come on, we’ve moved on to shock art, now we’re on to painting whole buildings or hacking television channels. Now THAT’S art, THAT’S advertising. Sticking it back to him.

People put advertising on everything now a days, it’s a shock you can’t look up at night and instead of seeing the moon, Nike’s not up there carving out half the f’ing planet into a swoosh. Imagine that every night, sky writing of “Just Do It” and then there’s just a crescent ’swoosh’ where the moon used to be.

The war is on, and every surface possible of carrying the message is the battleground, it doesn’t matter if you’re fighting to get people onto the “listen to our radio station” bandwagon or promoting your ideas of liberalism to people who don’t really care about your bumper stickers, you still drive like crap…

Everyone’s trying to push their brand of cola as “the drink real people drink” while insulting you the customer, because if that was true you’d already be drinking it, wouldn’t you? No, you’re listening to a board. Do you relize that, you’re taking your information from a colorful picture you tore out of a magazine you found at the dentists office. AGH society sickens me! I’m going amish…

Oh God the irony and cynicism of this post makes me sick, I can’t believe I’m putting you all through this:

Andy H. Warh-er…Nick Screw-the-Man Buccinno

When you think about advertisements you think of everything you come in contact with on a daily basis. Every where you go you are guaranteed to see an advertisement on a billboard, truck, bus, radio, TV. internet, and etc. Think about certain ads that truly catch your eye; they are the ones that are either brightly colored or are so disturbing or eye catching you can’t help but to look at it or even want to buy that product. Sometimes when you look at buildings or stores signs or business names are upside down or spelt wrong and it’s not because the company did it wrong it’s because they want to catch your attention. That’s exactly what a lot of anti smoking ads are trying to do know a days.

There are millions of people who smoke and recently smoking has become a major health issue. Some states in the United States have started to change their laws on smoking such as California that I know of for sure changed and you can’t smoke anywhere in public or in bars. There are commercials such as think that appear on TV. All the time with things that are disturbing but true of what cigarette smoking or second hand smoke can do to you or others around you. There are other commercials where children say “I smoke 2 packs a day.” These commercials seem cute because of the kids but it’s so true the message they are trying to get across. Think about people you went to school with whose parents smoked in the house and when they came to school they smelled like a cigarette.

One ad that gets my attention is this anti smoking ad

This makes you think maybe even laugh but the main point is that it has caught your attention and you might stop and think about how smoking could affect you as a smoker or someone else in your life. Joe chemo is funny to look at because the camel is a major cigarette company and to see a different side of not selling the product but instead being the victim is an interesting concept.

N.Corker

I believe that advertising is just a way to scam people to show you and give you whatever is in their pockets. As in money. I hardly walk by any advertisement that gives anything that is COMPLETELY free. Heck, I hardly ever walk by anything without seeing an advertisement. Always saying, get this. Buy this. You need this to better your life. Yes, most of the time, whatever it is that is being sold to you will be beneficial to you, while there are those other times when it is just unnecessary and will just take up space in your life. there are many ways that sales people can try and get you to buy whatever it is that they are selling. People will try to fast talk you, trick you and even try to make you feel bad about not buying their product. These are the ususal taticks that people try to use to get people to buy things. Remember just a little while back, i don’t know if people stil do this or not, but we used to have the door to door sales man. Of course, most of the time that didn’t work and they would get the door slammed in their faces. If you also think about it, most of these people are unattractive. I wouldn’t buy anything either. But now adadys we have ads that people can stop and read that give little to no information about the product. This ad is mostly for showing a pretty picture that will make people look at their ad and have them thinking about the product. One ad that will forever be in my mind: There was once a Guess Jeans ad where they had Paris Hilton in a pair of sexy tight itting jeans and no shirt. Instead they draped a snake over her to cover up the parts that everyone who stopped to look at the ad were trying to see. And because this was done in a way that made everything in the ad look very good and attractive, it made me go into the store. Now, i’m not saying that i think of Paris Hilton in anyway like that but, the ad itself caught my eye and made me go into the store. And i’m pretty sure that im not the only one….Brandon Richardson

Advertising is done to call the public attention. Most advertising is done everyday. It pursuit people to think about the merchandise or even to buy the merchandise from their companies. For example JC Penny’s has catalogs, commercial for the company on TV, certain section in the newspapers, the Internet and, etc. Now, do they need to put all of them advertising out like that? My answer is yes, because that is where all the people look at to know what is going on the world. This means that people are going to look at or even glance at the advertisement. When it comes to the TV advertising they sometimes they take it over broad with the persuading people to buy the product. But, sometimes it brings humor to so people’s eyes and sometime it is not. Can you tell me how you feel about the advertising of JC Penny? How can some of the things that are shown to the people change their mind about getting the product?

JC Penny is a type of store that sell clothes for babies, toddlers, teenagers, men, women as well as shoes for everybody. They also sell furniture, kitchens supplies, bathroom supplies and etc. The clothes and shoes are advertised more than any thing in the store. What is the reason why the clothes and shoes are advertised more than the other items in the store? My answer is because these items are sold more and these items are what people want the most. How can we help sell more of the other items? My answer is that we can advertise them more. The more you advertise an item you might just sell more. For example I’ve had the some furniture for over ten years and never really thought about getting anything new. But, one day I’m watching television and a JC Penny commerical come on advertising their furniture. So I decided to get all new furniture and at the same time was cheaper than any other furniture store. This show you that advertising really does help, not only the business but, the customers as well.

Advertising is a key part in the world. Advertising gets every-body’s attention some way, some how. I do not think that it would be a world without any type of advertisement. Who knows, what the advertising business might do in a couple of years from now.

Advertisement is everywhere in the world no matter where you go you are going to see some advertisement. The biggest seller for advertisement is sex; they know that sex sells everywhere. When advertisement make you think that they product make you look or feel more attractive, cool, sexy, it sales. Advertisement aims at sex because it sells to both younger and older crowd. People want to look good and be sexy and be in with the in crowd if you know what I mean. Advertisement can’t go with wrong with selling sex. This been one of the biggest sellers for advertisement products for many years now. Sex is everywhere now on television, magazines, books, cloths, etc. Advertisement is a bunch lies so you can buy their product. They hide the truth about their product to the general public so we can be the dummies to feed into what they are saying about their product. A little common sense can tell you that advertisement is bull sh#t. Most of the products out here don’t do what it says it’s going to do for you. It’s a small percentage of good advertisement that is telling the truth about their product. Advertisement always makes it seem that they care and they are trying to do well for you. Advertisements are the biggest liars in the world. Especially when they know that the product they are trying to sell have harmful affects to people and still try to sell the product. Advertisement is the biggest thing now if you want your product to sell. The more you put your product out their in the public eye it should sell. If you believe the advertisement you see or hear you deserve to be a victim of their product. Advertisement is annoying especially when it’s about something dumb and the product that they are trying to sell have nothing to do with the advertising. I think advertisement focus on the weak minded people with low self-esteem who needs something to make them feel cool. People should watch out for advertisement because sometimes you don’t notice that they are trying to sell a product right in your face. James Morrow

Advertisers try many tricks to get us to buy their products, even if they may seem unethical, such as the methods we saw in the movie Thank You For Smoking. Advertisements may seem attractive even if they are for dangerous products, such as cigarettes. There are many different areas of life that “sell”, such as cool, sexuality, fear, self-improvement, need, and celebrity endorsement.

We saw the idea of cool in the reading from our books about “cool hunting.” There are people that are actually paid to ask “cool” kids what they think defines cool. They are under the impression that if they can find out what products are “cool”, then those products will sell more, which is in fact true.

Sexuality sells products, such as Tag and Axe body spray. Most of the advertisements for those products feature half-naked models, which in turn makes men believe that if they purchase whatever the advertisement is trying to sell them, then they will attract those kinds of women.

Fear sells products, such as home security systems. They make the viewer of the advertisement believe that if they do not purchase their product, then their home will be more susceptible to break-ins.

Self-improvement sells products, such as acne and weight loss products. In those advertisements, they often have “Before” and “After” pictures of what the person looked like before and after they used the product. Obviously, the advertisements always show that the consumer looks better AFTER they use the product. In reality, that may not always be the case, but the advertisement makes the consumer believe that it is in fact the truth. Need is also an area of life that is featured in advertisements.

In many advertisements, they enforce the statement that you NEED their product to survive. However, much of the time, that is not the case. They just use that statement to sell more products.

Celebrity endorsement is probably the most notorious of all advertising methods. How many times have you seen a celebrity claim that they use a certain product on TV or in a magazine? About a million. People automatically think that just because a celebrity uses a certain product, it’s automatically a worthwhile way to spend their money. Those are the ways in which advertisers get people to buy their products.

I was reading this article ( http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20041206.html) and I thought it was very interesting because it mostly referred to online advertisements such as pop-ups and other kinds of advertisements that get really annoying when you can’t click the X button to close them. The article talked about the way people react to a pop-up mostly just of the way it was designed, how their advertising techniques impact people in a negative way, and cause people to think negatively of the company that is advertising. Here it is:

Advertising is an integral part of the Web user experience: people repeatedly encounter ads as they surf the Web, whether they’re visiting the biggest portals, established newspapers, or tiny personal sites. Most online advertising studies have focused on how successful ads are at driving traffic to the advertiser, using simple metrics such as click through rates.

Unfortunately, most studies sorely neglect the user experience of online ads. As a result, sites that accept ads know little about how the ads affect their users and the degree to which problematic advertising tricks can undermine a site’s credibility. Likewise, advertisers don’t know if their reputations are degraded among the vast majority of users who don’t click their ads, but might well be annoyed by them.

Now, however, we have data to start addressing these questions. At my recent User Experience 2004 conference, John Boyd from Yahoo! and Christian Rohrer from eBay presented a large body of research on how users perceive online advertising. Here, I offer a few highlights from their presentation (my comments on their findings are solely my responsibility).

What’s Bad

When users were asked how various aspects of online ads affected their Web experience, they rated the following attributes most negatively.

Design Element

Users Answering
“Very Negatively”
or “Negatively”

Pops-up in front of your window

95%

Loads slowly

94%

Tries to trick you into clicking on it

94%

Does not have a “Close” button

93%

Covers what you are trying to see

93%

Doesn’t say what it is for

92%

Moves content around

92%

Occupies most of the page

90%

Blinks on and off

87%

Floats across the screen

79%

Automatically plays sound

79%

These numbers are based on 605 respondents in 2004; similar numbers were found in 2002 and 2003.

People often have strong negative visceral reactions to ads that commit the sins listed in the table. One user, referring to an ad that automatically started playing audio, wrote: “IF ANYTHING COULD BE WORSE THAN POP-UPS, THIS IS IT. I HATE THIS AD. HATE HATE HATE.”

Another user entered the following comment on a major website’s feedback form: “You people should be ashamed of yourself! I did not ask to have 3 pop ups come across my screen when I visit you. I do not visit singles sites, and I don’t want to add 4 inches to my penis. As a matter of fact, I don’t use any of the services that pop up on my screen. I think it is disgusting that you money hungry bastards have infringed on my computer for your own selfish gain. From this moment on, I am boycotting you, and I am advising EVERYONE I know to do the same thing. Down with you and your pop up ads.”

Although it vividly illustrates user frustration with pop-ups, this second comment is unfair because the site didn’t host or advocate the offending ads. The ads were delivered by “spyware” that the user had unwittingly installed. In addition to showing the strong feelings engendered by intrusive or irrelevant ads, the comment also illustrates the extent to which pop-ups have become associated with unsavory content.

Users have started to defend themselves against pop-ups. The percentage of users who report using pop-up or ad-blocking software increased from 26% in April 2003 to 69% in September 2004, which is an astonishing growth rate.

Users not only dislike pop-ups, they transfer their dislike to the advertisers behind the ad and to the website that exposed them to it. In a survey of 18,808 users, more than 50% reported that a pop-up ad affected their opinion of the advertiser very negatively and nearly 40% reported that it affected their opinion of the website very negatively.

People are getting ever-more annoyed by pop-ups: During a fourteen-month period from December 2001 to February 2003, user ratings of pop-up advertisers grew more negative by almost one full rating point on a 1 to 7 scale.

What’s Good

Not many ads are actively loved by users, but some advertising techniques do have a positive impact on the user experience. Users were particularly pleased with ads that clearly:

indicate what will happen if people click on them,

relate to what people are doing online,

identify themselves as advertisements,

present information about what they are advertising, and

provide additional information without having to leave the page.

These design elements are tightly connected to traditional Web usability guidelines: make the users’ options clear, speak plainly, and provide the information users want.

Lessons for Websites

Sites that accept advertising should think twice before accepting ads that 80 to 90% of users strongly dislike. The resulting drop in customer satisfaction will damage your long-term prospects. Advertisers themselves might be tempted to continue with these nasty design techniques as long as they can find sites that will run them. After all, they typically yield higher click through rates. But click through is not the only goal. Users who are deceived into clicking on a misleading ad might drive up your CTR, but they’re unlikely to convert into paying customers. And your brand suffers a distinct negative impact when you antagonize customers and use techniques that are associated with the worst scum on the net.

Corporate websites can also learn from these studies, even if they don’t run ads. Many elements that users dislike in ad design are also common in mainstream Web design, with equally bad affects. A few things to avoid:

Pop-ups

Slow load times

“Teasing” links, misleading categories, and other elements that trick users into clicking

Content that doesn’t clearly state the site’s purpose or what a particular page covers

Content that moves around the page

Sound that plays automatically

All of these techniques have caused problems in traditional usability studies of non-advertising sites, and I’ve warned against them many times before. The fact that they’re associated with the most hated ads is one more reason that respectable sites should avoid them at all costs.

I think the way a company presents itself (through advertisements) says a lot about them. If they really want your attention they will go to great lenghts to get the best and most effective strategies so you won’t get negative feelings about their company or their products just because of the way they designed their pop-ups/online ads.
