Since the exercise with State Hall and spaces, I have been thinking a lot about other places, mainly the dorms, mainly Towers Residential Suites; where I’m living now.
I dont know if its actually more space or if im just used to being crammed into a small place with another person but it seems like i do have a little more space than last year in South Hall. But thats not the point. I’ve keeping an eye out in Towers and have noticed many new things about it. First off the floor all alternate between floors, mostly between blue and an off white color…i dont know why but it does. But what i really want to talk about are the rooms. They all have windows that are huge but only open like 6 inches. I think i know why…to prevent suicides…i know sounds outrageous but makes sense ( Bio Exam went wrong, broke up with your gf/bf, homesick, roommate smells lol). Then theres the bed (pretty much my best friend since coming to college) really long and my sheets have a hard time staying on and when its lofted (does wonders for making space) theres hardly anyway to make the bed; which makes me angry because then i look like a slob. But moving to the good stuff… HOW MUCH IT FEELS LIKE A JAIL CELL!!! We are thrown into a small cubicle of a place with one window and just enough space for our stuff. We can harldy fit our guests into our room let alone have space for the handicapped (which i dont really know if they have special rooms for them or not, but the handicapped doors have been broken since we have moved in) I’m just kiddin though, i know that Wayne State tried their best to fit as many kids into the same building comfortably but im complaining anyways. Sorry to have made you read about me complaining about where i live.

OK OK….. I think this is so funny. I agree about the little space. My thing is, I expected it to be waaaayyyy smaller. And I had my bed lofted too but since we dont have ladders and I am only 5′3, it was angerng me to have to climb up there especially when I was sick or really tired. This picture is hilarious.

LOL, it was funny reading this, i liked it. i actually thought they would be smaller too though. i am not going to lie it does look like a jail cell, but at least you have room for desk haha.

i completely agree with you. the rooms are very boxy and jail like. i think that its all about what you choose to do with it, even though you dont really get that many options. my bed is also lofted and i hate having to climb everytime i want to lay down. that extra space is important though.

This is great, Alex. Nice job. Also, you’re totally right about the windows. When I was an undergraduate, a girl “fell” out of her window really late one Saturday night (for “fell” read: was drunk, got pushed, jumped, etc.). And after that all of the dorm rooms had to replace the big, open windows for the ones that slant out.
I think the rooms here are nice compared to other colleges, but you’re right, it’s nothing like home. I like how you analyzed the suicide-proof window. I, myself, was not too fond of how the windows only opened a few inches. Therefore, my roomate and I took off the bars that prevent the window from opening wider. It was cool for a while until our screen took a six story tumble. We ran outside to see if it was salvagable, but we ended up just dropping it off in the dumpster. :-X That story stays in this blog, lol.

I never thought about it but the rooms are like jail cells. Are you afraid of falling off your bed in the middle of the night?lol. The picture of your room is to funny. I like your anaylsis of the why the window only opens so much.
