Space is very important to me and especially what I call home. When I graduated out of high school I got accepted to Michigan State University. At the end of august all of the freshmen had to move into their dorms that they were assigned to. I already knew that I was going to have two other people in my dorm area. So I expected the dorm to be a nice size. Little did I know when I arrive on campus to move in my dorm that is was so small. The dorm was the size of my bedroom at home no exaggeration. I was mad because there was no type of space to move around. It was just crowed because it was three of us all in this tiny room. The dorm had three desks, twin bunk beds with an additional twin bed added to the room, two medium size dressers, and one open closet space. And we had community showers which we had to walk down the hall to get to. Literally it was almost the size of a jail cell. That dorm area was terrible and I knew that I wasn’t staying in that dorm for a full semester. I was mad so that I left and went back home with in a week. I return to my house which only I and my brothers stayed in. I have more privacy at home and my own spacious room with a queen size bed. And the bathroom is right across the hall from my room. In my room I have my own desk area, entertainment set with my TV and radio on it, and my own closet space. It felt good to be at home were it is more comfortable and relaxing to be at. So space is important thing me and probably to a lot of people. I like to have room to move in and privacy. Being condemned affects your attitude towards people. When there is more space and more room to be free it makes your life a whole lot easier. Space is a key thing to have in your home. James Morrow
This is interesting, James. I think we could make much of the comparison between dorm structure and jail structure. This is an instance where really did impact the decisions you made in your life.
I would have died too if i had to live in a dorm room with no room or privacy. I would have moved after a week too. Talk about closterphobic… i cant spell! Good blog!!!

Personal space is very important. My sister had a room on MSU’s campus with a roommate and it is very packed, and tight. The WSU rooms are much bigger, and offer a lot more space. If I were in that situation I would have had to move back home too!
Very nice. I personally like to have my own room, which is one of the reasons I decided not to stay on campus. Along with the idea of always having someone else in the room, making it hard to study where I like to. For me, I always study on my bed, have my computer on to listen to music, and also have a small TV to watch HOUSE or any other show to that effect. Nice post, I agree that everyone needs a little elbow room.

I live at home too, and for a lot of the same reasons. I believe that many people are different and some actually like that way to live. They thrive on a close community. I am an only child, so I think that is why I am so used to this space and want it. People that may like the close dorm living may come from large familys so really, they are right at home. I don’t think there is anything wrong with not liking it, at least you gave it a try.
