Hello all. Once again I am here to tell you all about what I think about advertisement. So without further ado, I bring to you;
THE PROS AND CONS
OF ADVERTISEMENT
An opinion by William Turbett
*ahem* This week we all watched a film entitled Thank You For Smoking shows the life of lobbyist Nick Naylor as he works for a tobacco company. What we have also seen is how he advertises cigarettes. He doesn’t say that smoking is harmless or tobacco = bad, what he does is say “Yes smoking is bad, but you have the right to decide if you want to smoke or not.” Personally, whatever comes out of his mouth will either:
a. Dumbfound both the opposing side and the listeners
b. Make him sound really, really, cool
c. Prove that everyone that is against him is wrong and he isn’t
He sells the product by showing the facts about it, both good and bad, and saying “Hey, you do what you want to do.” However in some commercials the use of peer pressure is a overly used tool in the media to get their product to sell.
“If you don’t buy this, then your uncool”
“Buy now, or die”
Exaggerating? Yes I am. But the media is exaggerating too. By including various aspects of cool, awesome, or radical ideas to their product, they present their product to the younger ages, and for the older folks they say “Hey, wanna be young again?” But what really gets my unmentionables in a bunch is the overly used, stereotypical, moronic, ignorant use of SEX. I saw a commercial for pants, where the guy bends down to pull them up but struggles against some unseen force. Yet when he does pull them up, a chick in a phone booth pops up from the floor. What this commercial has shown me is that that pair of pants will bag me some hot supermodel girls, thus drawing the conclusion that I will get lucky. Honestly, if I wanted that, I would try to be in a TAG or AXE commercial. So in conclusion, advertising can be good, but most of the time its just stupid. And another thing we can all look forward to, Aaron Eckhart (Nick Naylor) is going to be Two Face in the upcoming Batman movie! HUZZAH!!

I didn’t know he was going to be in Batman? Excellent. And nice post, too. So, throwing some arbitrary sexuality into an ad just to get its point across is annoying to you. But does it work? We’ll discuss in class.
