As much as none of us would truly like to admit, advertising works. We all see things being advertised everywhere, literally. We don’t even realize that we are being bombarded with images and sounds that tell us to buy, buy, and buy these certain products. The sad thing….is that it works (for the majority of the people, that is.)
Advertising has a way to get things into our heads. Let’s look at little kids for instance, especially during Christmas. The little ones see the newest toys advertised on TV. It is probably some stupid commercial showing this toy to be way cooler than it really is, but who cares, it is still grabbing the kids attention, heck, some of them still grab my attention and I want to yell for my mom like I did when I was young and say that is what I want for Christmas. Of course I don’t do that, but I am sure all of us have those feelings too, to some extent. These advertisers know what they are doing. They are good at what they do. They can make the crappiest piece of clothing, toy, make-up, whatever item you want to use, and make it look like the most glorious thing in the world.
Don’t get me wrong, advertisers don’t just sell bad things. Most of the things we see being advertised on TV are things that we use everyday. I just wish that the way they advertised things would be different. I think that it is too in your face. All they say is: here is the product, this is why you need it, and now go buy it. What is so creative in that? Some ads are very cool, they make you laugh, they are really artistic, or they make you think about it. I prefer the thinking about it and artistic adds, rather than the typical TV beer commercial you see, with everyone getting drunk and having a great ‘ol time and then saying drink responsibly. That’s just not what I like to see. But, it seems like it works for everyone else. Like I said, advertising….it works…

This is a very true statement advertising does work. Its 1 of the major was that companies get us to buy what they want us to.

After watching the movie “Thank You for Smoking” I couldn’t agree with you more. Isn’t it so hypocritical to say drink our beer, and then in little letters at the bottom it says to “drink responsibly”. That “captain” in the movie said it best when he was told they would invest $50 million on a no smoking campaign when he said, ”I just hope its not too convincing.”

If there was no advertising we would all buy our stuff from the neighborhood stores like in the early years of the united States. From Christopher Columbus to George Bush, America is built on Advertising. That’s why it’s so successful.
Christopher Columbus pitched to King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. He was granted ships, supplies, food, clothing, and crews to work for him. He made several trips, by mistake of course. Either way he sold the idea after finding this vast land, that this rock was worth exploring and made America a business and a ne place to live a grow.
George Bush advertised the heck out of the already painful to bear World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. He allowed the footage to be shown so much that it angered and brought fear to the American People. He advertised so well that the country sided with him to go to war to get revenge, even though he may or may not have been fighting for the people after all. As of yet it is just theory, but he does have a family history in the oil industry and it was the first thing he secured. His acts decieved the American people and when he finally figured well maybe this is wrong his own cabinet members started dropping like flies. He was left to bear the eresults alone and is still the President of the United States.
Advertising is slowly building the world…..

I thought I wrote my name in the beginning and didn’t.
Sorry.

I think you are totally right. Talking about the ads for little kids around Christmas. Also the comment about alcohol commercials then having the bottom say drink responsibly. But you are totally true… it really does work.

Nice, Eric. I’d like to talk about holiday exploitation in class if we can.
