This video is funny to me, so I chose to talk about this.
In this video, the fact that hey chose an elderly Arabic woman to play the role she did was ingenious. If only they had a bigger budget. This seems to be a side effect of television and advertising in the Middle East. Yes, they have television, they advertise, and they are surely consumers. The thing is they are sort of frozen in the late 80’s to early 90’s as far as progression with electronics and media. From the sources I have people do have nice things in the middle east, but due to the way life has been under the Saddam Hussein Regime and the Taliban, their access to these things have been limited.
The lady in the video is in a traditional home setting in a Muslim family. She is surrounded by family who are speaking in Arabic, and listening to some Arabic form of music. I like it too! Easy going and regular.
Then all of a sudden there is some bangin’ hip hop music in the room. Your thinking what is that! Then the woman picks up her cellular phone and proceeds to answer her phone. She says “yo! Wassup!” and she laughs loudly and begins to act irregularly. She is a stand out character who acts the part of the personality associated with hip hop music.
Why, aside from the fact that it is funny, did I select this video commercial form all the millions of others on “youtube“?
It show how advertising moves and intertwines cultures in the world.
In the Muslim faith people are very conservative and traditional. The faithful do not post pictures but use geometric figures and shapes to design there space. They live in a certain form, as do many other cultures. This culture brought a culture that is very successful across the globe and made a joke about both hip hop, and the way of life in the Arabic home. Neither really offensive, so the add is funny. It is made to appeal to our sense of humor, knowledge of life in other places, and many other mind catching features which make you hold notice to the item for which they are trying to sell.
The add is for Phones and hip hop ring-tones.
The target audience is various because,
1) If your elderly and thought it was funny your appeal makes you a target for purchasing.
base on if you thought it was funny or not.
2) The youth of Arabic countries or wherever it was shown. Hip Hop is for most a sign of youth, a way to keep up with the times, and the hip hop culture is spreading throughout the world.
3) Comical people, who just thought it was funny and have the means to buy the products and use them.
4) Anybody else who saw this video. I don’t know what channel it showed on, or the circumstances involved with it. So I say a general audience.
Details:
How point was delivered:
Comparison-Contrast= The vibe and music of hip hop and Arabic home in commercial.
Also the people in the commercial and the elderly woman.
Illustration= They showed the effectiveness of individual style, ring-tones, and personality.
Tools of persuasion:
Ethos: Related to the persons character
Selling:
Self-improvement
Popularity
Individuality
Music
Considerations:
The setting and it’s contrast with the elderly lady was pure comedy.
The message is to show your personality wherever you are.
Medium: Television, Internet, Music.
written word: just the name of the phone
Cultural Resonance: it’s a combination of the fact that hip-hop is in this setting, and the fact that the person in this setting behaves and acts out against the ways of the culture.
