Dayna Mitchell25 September 2007Men and Women Roles in Society BlogMs. Jenna Gerds The roles of men and women in today’s society are very simple. Men play the masculine roles, and the women play the feminine role. Masculinity should not be a quality in a woman (suggests society). In a household, a man’s role is to be the bread winner. He is also supposed to be the protector of wife and children. The woman on the other hand, is supposed to be the home maker. She is supposed to cook the meals, clean the house, and tend to the children. Women are not supposed to be rough, or do anything that men like, or are supposed to do because then they are basically considered an outcast. The same exact concept is implied for men. Men have it especially hard because if they decide to do something that is considered as feminine, they will be looked at as a wimp, or as less of a man. When women do things that men are supposed to do, people look at them differently. But they also take the fact that women are “supposedly” more emotional than men into consideration. They feel like that’s the reason women want to be heard, or seen as an equal. I think that our society is very sexist. I also feel that because of our sexist society, men in general do not express their emotions or passions the same way that women do. Women tend to be more outspoken than men, and quicker to defend each other because men are basically not supposed to show any emotions that would be considered as sensitive. And if they do feel these type of emotions, they are definitely not supposed to show it. I feel that in our society, a woman will never be considered as an equal to a man. In a perfect society it would be fine for a woman to make the same amount of money as a man. It would also be fine for men to take up some of the roles and responsibilities as a woman.
You are right that men have to be masculine and work to bring in money because most homes are supported by men, I think that the men should always be counted on as well. Stan Thornton
you definitely nailed society’s views on gender! it does suck to be a guy and not be able to show as much emotion as girls can. But in the same breath, i can understand why it would suck to be a woman who is treated as unequal to a man. Do you personally feel that society will eventually have men and women completely equal? a place where women can act as men and make as much money and a place where men can act feminine and show emotion? i personally believe that at some time in the distant future, people won’t even be able to explain what sexism is.
I totally agree with you. Men do have it harder when it comes to being masculin, but on the other hand women have it harder when it comes to being treated equally in society. when you say that you think that society will never change, I half agree with you. If you look back socity has come along way from where it has been, but it seems like anyone will tell you that men and women should be treated equally, but why has it not happened yet?
