In this particular society that we live in, women are thought out to play specific roles no matter what the situation may be. In the movie, Halloween, the women were portrayed out the way society sees them. They stay home, they take care of children, they cook, they clean, they adhere to what “the man says,” and according to the movie, they are always the ones getting hurt or in trouble. And in the same right, men are portrayed the same way. They go out and protect, they leave the children up to the women and in this movie and they seem to be the only ones who have a mission. But why is it that way? In the movie, all of the babysitters were females. Why weren’t any of the babysitter males? Is it because in order to take care of a child and babysit, you need to be able to cook and clean? Is society saying that they don’t think that men know how to cook and clean? Also, one of the babysitters suggested that her boyfriend come over to the house where she was babysitting. Instead, the boyfriend “told” her to come over to his house. Why is it that whatever the boyfriend said was the final say in everything? See the consequences of doing what someone else tells you to do all the time? Michael Myers killed her. Her life ended. Another thing: why couldn’t Michael Myers be Michelle Myers? She could’ve done the same things as Michael only; she would’ve been in a women form. Do women not get angry and want to go on a killing spree as well? I believe they do. Another thing in the movie was that the police officer and the social worker, who went out looking for Myers, were both men. Are we saying that women can’t go out looking for a serial killer? Are we saying that women can’t get in harm’s way to serve and protect like men do? The only part in the movie seemed to fit into this stereotypical synopsis was when the little boy was scared and the little girl was the one saying that there was nothing to be scared of. This showed that guys can cry and break down a little bit more than girls can. I guess….Brandon Richardson
Well I thing that some men do not want to show that they can cry because of their pride that they have to keep. I feel that there was not male babysitter becauese some guy think that is a women job. It is not because men do not know how to cook or clean. Some time it is from the way they was rasie.

You raise some good points, Brandon. I was wondering if anyone was going to ask why Mike Meyers has to be male. Also, I think sometimes people don’t trust grown men that want to babysit. We’ll discuss.
I agree with your post. I think the reason the movie was portayed in this particular way- as far as gender goes- is because people associate women with- mother, cleaning & cooking, babysitting more then automatically. In a way it goes the same for men. When boys grow up they look up to their fathers or brothers as role models, not their mothers. In more ways both genders have been told what to do and how to act. It would make no sense to viewers seeing “Mike Myers” as a woman just because they would have a hard time picking up the pieces in their brains. Its not that men cant babysit, its just the movie industry- shows what people want to see. Its sad to say that people fight about gender differences, but then portray it in movies, and ofcourse it goes around like a big circle. People perceive the two genders in similar ways, meaning each having specific roles in life because they see it everyday.

Whoever you are, you sounded like you were joking to me. The points that you were making were valid though. I was laughing the whole time I was reading your post. I am in agreement with what you were writing though.

Women are portrayed as babysitters, because that is considered a females job to do. The man goes to work and the women stay home. I think that is stupid, personally. Also, i guess they had to have the man be the killer because it looks more scarey? well i know a lot more women who look scarey when they are yelling at people and acting crazy. I guess they were looking for masculinity as a sign of power.

Good point, about the role of the men in the household. When my mother and father were married he did not knoww how to do anything because he had 7 sisters that did it all for him. It went so far that he did not even take his plate to the sink when he was finished. As time went on he learned how to cook almost as good as any women I know execpt my mom who taught him. He now cooks us breakfast and dinner on sundays and some other days out of the week when he is not working. So, men can clean and cook. PKV
Great points made in your post. I agree with you, why can’t the babysitter be a male? I guess it is our society that we live in that has taught us that being a babysitter is something that a girl does and not a guy. If we were to see a movie with a male as a babysitter or a female as the serial killer, we would all be puzzled because that is something that we aren’t used to.

I think that women in this movie were portryed as the ones who had to babysit and like they were the weak people because thats how it was back then. The women were supposed to be the ones who took care of the kids and cook. Thats how they portray them as it was in reality. Men are always supposed to be strong and the ones that are supposed to defend the women. in reality now it is not like that because i know some guys who really weak and afraid of women. I know some women that can beat a man if they were to ever get into a fight. I know that it wasnt always loke that in the past, women were the people who always look to the men to open up jelly jars or to get something that they couldnt reach. it’s not like that anymore as a women i know that we are more independant and we dont need a man to do everything for us. I know personally that i dont need a guy to survive and get along with my life.
